Mouth painting never fails to amaze me.  As an artist, knowing the amount of concentration it takes to create a piece of art by mouth painting  gives me an even greater respect for this kind of perseverance and talent. If you have never witnessed this magical and intriguing highly skilled type of mouth painting, please take some time to research a great artist by the name of Mark Sotak.  Mark paints only with his mouth, and is categorized as a mouth painter.

Can you imagine not having use of your arms or legs?   Most of us complain if we  experience minor inconveniences going about our daily life and enjoying our independence.  I am in awe of these artists and the beautiful work they create.   There are very few activities as therapeutic, healing, and engaging as creativity.  However, the wonder of art is that it is a gift to the world and it is also a gift to the creator.  Art heals.

One of these specticular artists is a gentleman by the name of Mark Sotak that I had the pleasure of meeting in 2008.   Mark was paralyzed in an automobile accident in 1981 leaving him a quadriplegic.  After experiencing this tragic accident, Mark did not give up.  He continued on with his education and became a lawyer representing personal injury and bankruptcy.  This career did not fulfill his his desires or purpose in life.

After several years Mark discovered that his true passion was in the creation of art and focused his attention to the business of painting.  He founded Studio des Abilities.  Imagine creating art by holding and manipulating a brush held only with your mouth?  He blossomed as an artist by studing and developing his technique via mouth painting.

Mark’s work is currently on exhibit at The Brewhouse Gallery through May 31st, 2015.  He is the featured artist on Tuesday May 12th, 2015.  This month is the one-year anniversary of  The Brewhouse Gallery,   a unique pub, coffee house and gallery. A hangout featuring artists and entertainment guaranteed to deliver a great experience for everyone.  Address: 720 Park Ave, Lake Park, FL 33403

Mark Sotak was born and raised in Rocky River, Ohio right on the shore of Lake Erie, so it was natural that he loved the outdoors and had a great sense of adventure. Mark left his home in 1981 to attend college in Florida, where his life would suddenly be changed forever. One night, while driving in a car with a bunch of his college buddies, the vehicle Mark was in lost control, and after rolling three times, came to rest in a roadside ditch. Mark was left with a severe spinal injury, confining him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He went back to Ohio for treatment and rehabilitation after the accident, but eventually moved to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where he actually acquired a degree in Law. Not being happy with being a lawyer, Sotak discovered a true passion for art and began painting with the brush held in his mouth. Today, Mark is an avid member of his church and credits God and his “church family” for his artistic talent. His best works include vivid seascapes and portraits.
